It's a beautiful day today and I'm thrilled that it's the weekend so I can get out and enjoy it. After an insanely busy week last week, I'm so glad that I have nothing planned for today and I'll be able to relax around the house. Chances are, I'll get wrapped up in doing a project here, but at least it'll be by choice and not something I've pre-scheduled.
I'm going to go enjoy my coffee on the deck for the first time since we moved into our new house!
I hope everyone has a great day!
What do you have planned for today?
The other day it was in the 90’s (unseasonable for fall) and Magi and I decided to ride over to City Beach, one of the many beaches on the Indian Ocean four or five miles west of Perth. Despite the fact we are well into autumn, the water is far warmer then the water off Cape Cod in the middle of summer. According to my knowledgeable partner, one usually swims in the Indian Ocean early in the day when the water is calm. Come afternoon, one has to contend with huge waves crashing on the beach as well as a strong undertow.
I guess I really wasn’t prepared that day for what happened to me. Standing by the edge, I contemplated the big surf pounding the beach. Three young men were getting some big wave action nearby. Putting one foot in the water, I could feel the coolness of the water. How refreshing the water would feel if I could just get beyond where the waves were breaking. As the water receded, I rushed out diving into the water and swam out beyond the crashing surf. It was glorious until a big wave came crashing down and I found myself caught up by a strong undertow. Pulmelted by fine sand, I was upside down. I couldn't for a few seconds tell where I was. Frantically, I fought my way back to the surface and took a big breath. I do have to say I was rather frightened by the whole experience. Coming out of the water, I told Magi I had enough swimming for the day.
Two days later, we were back at the beach. This time it was Cottesloe and Magi parked near the breakwater. “The water will be calmer here near the groin, Bob.” I was quite nervous about venturing into the water. Nevertheless, I walked down to the beach. Surveying the waves, they really didn’t look rough. As the waves receded, I plunged in….fear conquered.
In March, “Sculpture at the Beach” once again was at Cottesloe Beach. One of the many fine sculptures was “Upside Down Again” by Hilde A. Danielsen. At the time I thought it should have been titled “The Wave”. Now, from personal experience, I understand why the artist chose the title.
Although “Upside Down Again” did not win any prizes at the festival, it was my favorite. I loved walking around it and viewing it from different angles.
